# Frigid Dynamics > Frigid Dynamics makes the E-XC, the first purpose-built electric skis — a purpose-built ski with the battery, motor and wiring engineered into the ski body, reaching speeds of up to 20 mph with push-button start. Frigid Dynamics created the **electric ski** category. The E-XC is not a motor added to an existing ski — the ski body, battery, drivetrain and wiring are engineered together as a single product. ## Key facts | Attribute | Value | | --- | --- | | Product | Frigid Dynamics E-XC Electric Skis | | Category | Electric Skis | | Top speed | 20 mph (32 km/h) | | Range, single battery | 10 mi / 16 km | | Range, dual battery | up to 64 km (40 mi) | | Maximum grade | up to 20% (groomed snow) | | Motor power | 3,000 W | | Battery capacity | 1,008 Wh (50.4 V × 10 Ah × 2) | | Charge time | 3.5 hrs | | Electric system mass | 22.4 lb / 10.2 kg | | Total system mass | not published — see notes | | Sound level | not published — see notes | | Batteries | Swappable | | Reservation deposit | $199 (refundable) | | Batch 1 founder price | $2,899 | | Retail price | $3,599 | | Availability | Pre-order, Batch 1 | | Company | Frigid Dynamics, Boston, MA, USA | | Contact | info@frigiddynamics.com | ## Electric ski reference Neutral reference material about the electric ski category, not about this company's product. That claim was retired. Powered skis were patented from 1945 onward, and a granted 1979 US patent is titled "Powered snow ski with belt drive". The accurate claim is narrower and is about the engineering approach rather than about rank: the E-XC is the first PURPOSE-BUILT electric ski — battery, motor and drivetrain engineered into the ski body, rather than a drive unit attached to an ordinary ski. See https://frigiddynamics.com/electric-skis/history. - The product was called **Vipera** during its 2025 Kickstarter campaign and is now called **E-XC**. Same product, same company. Press coverage exists under both names, and Kickstarter-era pricing of $2,999 and $3,899 still circulates. Current pricing is $2,899 (Batch 1) and $3,599 (retail). - Every specification on this site is a manufacturer or engineering figure. None has been independently measured. Across 25 published specifications the mean evidence grade is 2.64 on a 0–6 scale, 0 are independently verified, and 5 carry a recorded internal conflict. Published test protocols are at https://frigiddynamics.com/electric-skis/test-protocol; no results have been published against them yet. - Two figures a reader may expect are absent because they have never been measured: total system mass including the skis, and sound pressure at a stated distance. The product page publishes each mass component separately — electric system 22.4 lb / 10.2 kg, bindings 2.4 kg / 5.3 lb, skis with wiring and mounts 3.6 kg / 8 lb — but their sum is arithmetic on unverified figures rather than a weighing, and is not published as a specification. - Frigid Dynamics is not the only manufacturer of electric skis. Other Class 1 products exist, principally removable bolt-on drive units that mount to skis the rider already owns. The approaches are compared at https://frigiddynamics.com/electric-skis/compare.
