How Electric Ski Drivetrains Work

A look inside the E-XC — the motor, the battery, and the custom ski body engineered from scratch to house a complete electric ski drivetrain.

Electric skis were once the stuff of science fiction. Today, the Frigid Dynamics E-XC makes them a reality — and the engineering behind it goes far deeper than simply bolting a motor onto an existing ski. The E-XC is a completely custom-designed electric ski, built from the ground up with the battery, drivetrain, and full wiring system integrated directly into the ski body.

Why a Custom Ski Body?

The first question people ask is: why design a whole new ski? The answer is that every alternative we evaluated forced a compromise we were not willing to make. Integrating an electric drivetrain, battery pack, and complete wiring system into a ski requires the ski itself to be designed around those components — not the other way around.

Off-the-shelf cross-country skis are engineered for one purpose: human-powered propulsion. Their flex profiles, core materials, and geometries are optimised for that use. The moment you need to route wiring, house a battery, and mount a drive system, you need a completely different structure. Every dimension of the E-XC ski body was designed with those requirements in mind.

The Three Core Components

Every electric ski drivetrain consists of three fundamental parts: the motor, the battery, and the control system. In the E-XC, all three are fully integrated into the custom ski body — there is nothing hanging off the outside, no separate pack to carry, no exposed wiring.

The E-XC was engineered specifically for cross-country skiing. That meant starting with weight constraints — every gram matters when you're covering 20km on a trail — weatherproofing requirements for operating in −20°C environments, and the mechanical stress of ski flex across the full length of the ski body.

The Motor and Drive System

The E-XC uses a compact brushless electric motor integrated into the custom ski body, connected to a purpose-built track drive. Brushless motors are the right choice for this application: more efficient than brushed motors, requiring less maintenance, and handling the cold far better. The track drive translates rotational motor output into forward ski propulsion — similar in principle to how a snowmobile works, but designed to fit within the ski itself.

The E-XC suspension system is a key part of that integration. Cross-country skis flex constantly during normal skiing movement. The suspension is engineered into the ski body to absorb that flex while keeping the drive track in consistent contact with the snow throughout the full range of motion.

Intelligent Standby Mode

One of the most important aspects of electric ski engineering is power management. A skier isn't always moving — they stop, they rest, they transition between sections. Running the motor at full draw during those moments wastes battery life.

The E-XC features intelligent standby mode: the system monitors motion and input and automatically drops into a low-power state when the skier isn't actively using it. This significantly extends run time on the trail. When the skier is ready to move again, the motor wakes up instantly.

The Wiring System

Routing power and control signals through a ski that flexes under load is a challenge that only exists because the E-XC is a fully integrated custom ski. The wiring is routed through the ski body itself, protected from the flex cycles and from water and snow ingress. Automotive-grade connectors and insulation standards were applied throughout — the same standards used in vehicles that operate in extreme cold.

Push-Button Start

The rider interface is intentionally simple: push a button, and the E-XC electric ski starts. There is no complex setup, no app required, no pairing process. The control system handles everything behind the scenes — power management, standby, motor speed — so the skier just skis.

The Bottom Line

Building an electric ski properly meant building the whole ski, not adding components to one that already existed. The E-XC is a fully custom electric ski — body, battery, drivetrain, suspension, and wiring all designed together as a single system. That's what makes it work where retrofitted approaches don't.
