Electric snow mobility comparison database

Electric skis, electric snowbikes, electric and combustion snowmobiles, and human-powered touring — compared on one table, with the source and confidence level recorded for every single value.

Electric skis weigh roughly 10–30 kg and cost $2,900–$3,500; electric snowbikes weigh around 87 kg and cost about $8,900; electric snowmobiles weigh 200–350 kg and cost $19,500–$22,250; a human-powered touring setup costs $700–$2,500 and weighs under 6 kg. Electric skis are the only powered category on which the rider stands on skis rather than sitting on a vehicle, which determines both how they ride and how access rules are likely to treat them.

The comparison table

Ordered by class, then by mass. Human-powered touring and the combustion snowmobile are included as reference cases so the table describes the whole activity rather than only the electric products within it.

How to read this table

No value here is a bare number. Every cell carries where the figure came from and how much weight it deserves, because a comparison table without provenance is an assertion.

Why there are gaps

Cells marked n/p are values no manufacturer has published. They are left empty on purpose. A comparison database with no gaps is one that guessed, and a reader who catches a single guess is right to discard the entire table.

Two cautions about specific columns. Range figures across this category are measured under conditions nobody discloses — different temperatures, snow types, rider weights and power modes — which makes them close to incomparable. Battery capacity in watt-hours is a fairer basis for comparison, which is why it has its own row. Sound is published as adjectives ("near-silent", "quiet") rather than as decibels at a stated distance, which means no product in this category currently has a checkable noise figure, including the E-XC.

Alpine touring (skinning)

The unpowered baseline. Climbing skins grip the snow on the way up and strip off for the descent. Unlimited range, no charging, permitted everywhere — and the slowest and most physically demanding option by a wide margin.

Frigid Dynamicsour product

Motor, battery, and drive engineered into the ski body rather than bolted on. Integration buys ride feel and weight distribution; the trade is that the ski and the drivetrain are one product and cannot be separated.

A single-track electric snow vehicle roughly a third the mass of a snowmobile. The most mature product in electric snow mobility, with real production volume, dealers, and independent reviews — and the benchmark any newer category is measured against.

Taiga Nomad

Taiga Motors

A full-size electric snowmobile. Included because it defines the ceiling of the electric snow category — and because its 2027 backcountry model ships with integrated ski and snowboard mounts, which puts it in direct competition for the same trip a Class 1 rider is trying to make.

Other Class 1 products

The E-XC is not the only electric ski available. A small number of European manufacturers sell removable bolt-on drive units — a motor and a tread that mount to skis the rider already owns and come off again for the descent — aimed principally at ski mountaineering ascents rather than at flat and rolling travel. They are a genuinely different design approach with different trade-offs: compatibility with skis you already have, against added mass sitting above the ski and extra steps to fit and remove.

Why they are described rather than named

This table compares ways of travelling over snow rather than brands, so individual manufacturers in the same class are described by approach rather than named. Specifications for bolt-on units are published by their makers and are straightforward to find.

Unresolved contradictions in the public record

Where published sources disagree, both figures are recorded rather than one being quietly chosen. Picking a number and hiding the disagreement is what makes most comparison tables untrustworthy — and when a reader finds the other figure themselves, it is the whole table that loses credibility, not the one cell.

E-XC range

Press coverage from the Vipera-era campaign reports a flat 10 miles; current published specifications give a range band and a dual-battery figure. These are not necessarily inconsistent — a lower bound quoted as a single number — but until measured range is published under the test protocol, all three figures remain in circulation.

E-XC and Vipera product identity

Vipera vs E-XC

The same product under two names. Vipera was the Kickstarter-era name; E-XC is current. Kickstarter pricing of $2,999 and $3,899 still appears in press coverage alongside current pricing of $2,899 and $3,499.

Method and corrections

Every figure here was read from the source it is attributed to. Nothing was carried over from another comparison table. Where a manufacturer publishes a figure and press coverage reports a different one, both appear, attributed separately.

This table will be wrong at some point — products change, prices change, and some of these gaps will be filled by manufacturers after this was written. Every entry carries a verification date. If you find an error or can fill a gap with a citable source, send it in — corrections are credited.
