Ten years ago, the idea of an e-bike was niche. Today, e-bikes outsell traditional bicycles in several European countries. The pattern is consistent: add electric propulsion to a human-powered activity and you dramatically expand who can participate, how far they can go, and how much they enjoy it.

Why Now?

The technology needed to build a practical electric ski has only recently become viable. Lithium battery energy density has improved dramatically over the past decade. Brushless motor efficiency in extreme cold has improved significantly. And the miniaturisation of motor controllers means the electronics that would have required a backpack in 2010 now fit inside the body of a ski.

Frigid Dynamics spent years on this problem precisely because the timing wasn't right before. The E-XC is a completely custom electric ski — the ski body, battery, drivetrain, suspension, and full wiring system all designed together as one integrated product. This wasn't possible to build at a practical size and weight until recently. That convergence is what made the E-XC possible.

Why Custom-Built Matters

Earlier attempts at electric skiing — bolting motors or battery packs onto existing skis — consistently failed to produce a product worth using. The weight was in the wrong place. The ski flexed in ways the added components couldn't handle. The wiring was exposed. The handling suffered.

Our conclusion was that building the whole ski was the only route to the result we wanted. The E-XC is custom-designed at every level: the ski body geometry accommodates the battery. The internal structure routes the wiring. The suspension is engineered to work with the drivetrain through the full flex range of the ski. Nothing is an afterthought.

The Accessibility Argument

Cross-country skiing has an accessibility problem. It's one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet. The barrier to entry is high, the learning curve is steep, and the cardiovascular demand means many people — regardless of their love for the outdoors — simply can't keep up on the trail.

Electric powered skis change this. They don't eliminate the skill element or the outdoor experience — they lower the floor so more people can participate. A 65-year-old who can no longer maintain the cardiovascular output of a 30-year-old can now cover the same distance on the same trail at the same pace. A beginner who doesn't yet have the technique to generate speed on flat terrain can glide confidently from the first session.

This is the same argument that made e-bikes mainstream. The first adopters of electric powered skis won't all be elite athletes — they'll include the millions of people who wanted to ski but found the barrier too high.

Backcountry and Expedition Use

At the other end of the spectrum, experienced backcountry skiers and expedition tourers face a different problem: distance. Covering 40+ kilometres in a day on cross-country skis is achievable for fit athletes, but the energy expenditure is extreme. Expedition range is limited by the calories you can carry and the energy output you can sustain.

The electric propulsion built into the E-XC ski changes this calculus on long flat sections — which make up the majority of most backcountry routes. Conserving muscle energy for climbs, descents, and technical sections means longer range, lower fatigue, and more capacity to handle unexpected conditions.

How Electric Skis Are Different From Snowmobiles

The most common misconception is that electric powered skis are just small snowmobiles. They're not — and the distinction matters for where you can use them.

Snowmobiles are prohibited on groomed cross-country ski trails, protected backcountry areas, and most national parks. Electric skis like the E-XC are fundamentally different: you are still skiing. Your body is on the ski, your technique drives the movement, and the motor built into the ski amplifies that movement rather than replacing it. The use cases align with skiing, not snowmobiling.

What Comes Next
